catering to half of America, annoying the other half

I recently switched from a Roth IRA to a Traditional. I did a recharacterization (fancy word for taking the money in my Roth and putting it in my new Traditional IRA), and filed to make a new contribution from my checking account. A couple of weeks later, I get a letter from my retirement service saying:

We are unable to process your request because the checking account to be debited must be in the same geographic region as your IRA.

My checking account was opened in Florida (I lived there during middle and high school). My IRA was opened in New York (where I live now). Now, half of all Americans live within 50 miles of where they were born (I know, wow). So, really, these guys are set up to inconvenience 50% of America, give or take. Not pleased.
